Kaashi Raaghav, directed by debutant Dhruv Goswami, is a daring exploration of love, betrayal, and redemption. Breaking away from the conventional tropes of Gujarati cinema, the film delivers a narrative rich in emotional complexity and cultural depth.
The story centers on Kaashi (Deeksha Joshi), a sex worker determined to find her lost daughter. Her journey forces her to confront a turbulent past, from her days as a village girl in Gujarat to her elopement with Raaghav (Jayesh More), a man whose betrayal led her into a life of exploitation. Years later, their paths cross again, offering a fragile chance for reconciliation and a new beginning.
Deeksha Joshi delivers a powerhouse performance as Kaashi, portraying the character’s strength and vulnerability with remarkable depth. Jayesh More complements her with a nuanced portrayal of Raaghav, a man wrestling with guilt and a desire for redemption. Their chemistry captures the complexity of a relationship marked by love, betrayal, and hope. The supporting cast, particularly Shruhad Goswami and child artist Pihushree Gadhvi, adds layers of authenticity and emotion, making the story resonate even more deeply.
Visually, the film is beautiful. Cinematographer Pratik Parmar brings Gujarat’s rural landscapes, Kolkata’s chaotic streets, and Varanasi’s spiritual serenity to life, creating a vivid backdrop for the narrative. The music by Vatsal and Kavan beautifully underscores the film’s emotional beats, enriching its storytelling. However, the dubbing falters at times, momentarily disrupting the immersion during key scenes.
The film’s pacing is a mixed bag. While the first half is taut and emotionally gripping, the second half feels uneven, with certain scenes dragging and diluting the impact. The ambitious narrative occasionally overreaches, with some moments coming off as contrived rather than organic. Yet, these shortcomings are outweighed by the film’s overall emotional resonance and daring storytelling.
